It is no secret that job hunting SUCKS especially in a middle of a pandemic. But speaking from experience there is a silver lining. I’ve spoken with a few of my old cohort mates about my job hunting experience and thought I would write about the tips that worked for me that helped me land a job in 3 months!
I graduated from Flatiron School’s Software Engineering Immersive program in April 2020, declared my job search in May and received a job offer in August.
TIP #1:
Don’t be shy and NETWORK.
I am an introvert and there is nothing more that makes me cringe than networking. But sometimes being behind a computer screen is a bit easier. I attended meetups, online networking events, and joined different slack channels to GET MYSELF OUT THERE. It’s a small step but it’s a small step in the right direction. Make sure you make contact with at least 5 people when you do attend events. If they are career fair events, make sure you get the contact of the company’s reps that are in attendance and email them!
TIP #2:
Tell an enthusiastic story about your journey into tech.
If you’re coming from a bootcamp, chances are you have a background that is not in tech. Tell a story that captivates whoever you’re talking to and you may want to tell it differently depending on the audience. In addition to completing bootcamp, you have other skills from your past that you can offer in your new job. You…
